The Indian conformity assessment system can be viewed as a supply chain, running from the customers at the front line all the way to the International Accreditation Forum, the international association of Conformity Assessment Accreditation Bodies:
Quality Council of India (QCI)
Quality Council of India (QCI) is a non-profit autonomous society that has been set up to establish an accreditation structure and to spread quality movement in India.
One of the key objectives of the QCI is to develop, establish & operate National Accreditation programmes in accordance with the relevant international standards & guides for the conformity assessment bodies certifying products, personnel, management systems, carrying out inspection and for the laboratories undertaking testing & calibration.

Bureau of Indian Standardization (BIS)
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) acts as a certification body in the Indian conformity assessment system, as provided by the BIS Act 2016 (formerly 1986) was notified on 22 March 2016, has been brought into force with effect from 12 October 2017. BIS bestows the Standard Mark of conformity on products that meet the requirements of the relevant Indian Standards. In addition to product certification, BIS certifies quality management systems and environmental management systems, operates a Gold Hallmarking scheme, and runs the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) for food safety. Finally,
BIS operates laboratories throughout India which test BIS-certified products against relevant Indian Standards.
