SCCP II: Water and Sanitation

Resources

ANSI, through the U.S.-India Standards and Conformance Cooperation Program (SCCP ll) has leveraged its standards expertise to assist India with its development goals of expanding access clean water and quality waste management. The U.S.-India SCCP ll hosted the Workshop on Water and Sanitation System in India: Leveraging Standards for Infrastructure Improvement in June 2018. The technical workshop convened over 100 stakeholders consisting of leading U.S. and India experts and standards developers for technological exchange on water and sanitation management. ANSI’s work in the water and sanitation sector in India is timely as the Indian government launched the Jal Jeevan Mission that aims to provide safe drinking water to all rural households by 2024 and waste management systems to mitigate the discrepant access to both by rural and urban Indians.

Prominent U.S. standards developers in the water and sanitation sector—including International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), American Water Works Association (AWWA), NSF International, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)—participated in the workshop by providing opening remarks and presenting. U.S. experts presented improving water efficiency and sanitation, wastewater treatment and utility management, and water quality standards and conformance. The workshop culminated with a panel discussion on building a skilled workforce for water treatment facilities.

This technical workshop allowed U.S. speakers to provide insight and understanding of top standards and best practices for quality water and wastewater treatment and identify opportunities for collaboration with Indian stakeholders to assist them with their needs in the sector. U.S. experts underscored the importance of adopting international water and sanitation standards and increase BIS’s openness to them. The same month in June 2018, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Water Resources Technical Department formed to oversee the standardization of water resources development and management, including drinking and industrial water supply.

In addition to expanding participants’ knowledge in the sector, the workshop also put leading water and sanitation organization in contact to expand their network and strengthen business relationship in India.
