Standards and conformity assessment information for India

Key Information: early warning

early warning
How can I get "early warning" about changes to these requirements?

There are several ways to stay informed of proposed changes to regulations and standards in India:

  • Subscribe to WTO/TBT notifications
  • View BIS Standards Monthly Additions for draft standards available for comment
  • Get engaged in committees within the ANSI-CII-BIS partnership

First, an excellent resource for early warning on proposed changes to the market access requirements for India (as well as for those of other WTO members) are World Trade Organization (WTO) Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) notifications. The WTO calls members to notify proposed changes to federal- and state-level technical regulations that could significantly affect trade to the WTO Secretariat prior to implementation. This can help exporters to quickly and efficiently stay apprised of changes.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is designated by the Indian Ministry of Commerce as the national WTO-TBT Enquiry Point. All interested parties can sign up for electronic dissemination of WTO/TBT Notifications from the WTO. In addition, BIS publishes abstracts of notifications in its publication Standards Monthly Additions.

Second, in addition to WTO/TBT Notifications regarding regulations, BIS also publishes drafts and proposed changes to Indian Standards in Standards Monthly Additions.

Finally, by getting involved in the committees and standards activities of ANSI, CII, and BIS, companies can ensure that they remain up-to-date on any changes to technical regulations or standards that may affect their business.
